Taking advantage of a low noise.

It's best for noise figure (NF) measurement of the optical fiber amplifier (EDFA etc.), because the RIN characteristic is quite excellent and has no influence to the characteristic of object to be measured.
About RIN:
RIN is an index of the intensity noise that the semiconductor laser is generated, and the one that the ratio of the light intensity noise per the unit frequency (fluctuation of the light intensity) and the average light output was taken. The RIN value will be deteriorated, if getting more noise with the measure at same optical output. It's necessary to lower the noise level that is fluctuation of light by laser source output to make sure to detect the signal by the optical communication.

Utilizing the narrowness linewidth and the short-term frequency stability.

It is the best for the measurement that uses an optical beat, because the Spectrum linewidth is very narrow which is 50kHz or less, and the frequency is steady.
* About spectrum linewidth:
It shows the wavelength spread, and the narrower linewidth is, the higher single wavelength state is. In the laser, fluctuation of oscillation frequency by various changes is a Spectrum linewidth. It is necessary to control the Spectrum linewidth that is a time fluctuation of the laser oscillation spectrum in the optical communication because of the decrease of it of the noise characteristic when the signal is transmitted.
